GreenGroup is testing the first 40-ton electric Scania truck in Romania, with a range of 350 km, for the first time

Buzău, July 15, 2024 - GreenGroup, a European leader in the recycling industry, through its plastic recycling division GreenTech, announces its participation in Scania's demo pilot project, a world-class transport solutions provider, testing the first 40-ton electric Scania truck.

The test, conducted over a one-month period, aims to evaluate the efficiency and sustainability of electric transport in GreenTech's logistical processes. The expected outcomes include a significant reduction in CO2 emissions and improved operational efficiency in the company's daily transport services of recycled raw materials.

GreenTech, a member company of GreenGroup and a market leader in plastic recycling, uses the electric Scania truck regionally to supply its two recycling and production plants in Buzău and Urziceni. The activity flow includes transporting PET bales from warehouses in Ilfov and Bucharest counties to the recycling plant in Buzău, and subsequently, the resulting plastic flakes are transported to the polyester fiber factory in Urziceni, Ialomița County.

GreenTech recycles over 150,000 tons of PET waste annually, turning them into plastic flakes, from which it produces rPET granules, used in the production of new packaging (bottle-to-bottle), polyester fibers, used in the automotive industry for upholstery or padding, in the hygiene industry for plasters, wet wipes, and more, and PET strap, a superior binding product for heavy-duty tasks. The company focuses on innovation and technology, implementing cutting-edge solutions that increase efficiency and sustainability in the waste industry.

This is the first heavy-duty electric Scania truck and benefits from the technical support and expertise of partners Trans Tomicris, a transport company that emphasizes sustainability, and Hochstaffl Romania.

Compared to a diesel truck, using the electric Scania truck allows for a reduction of CO2 emissions by approximately 36%, based on Romania's current energy mix.

"Even though it's only a month of testing, the choice to use this electric Scania truck reflects our ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability in recycling. Besides our recycling and production activities, we also focus on the operational side, identifying the most efficient transport solutions meant to reduce environmental impact and support our business growth," said Alina Genes, CEO of GreenTech.

"We are excited about the interest in fully electric solutions from a major company in the recycling industry. And we are even more excited about the growing concern among companies in Romania for reducing CO2 emissions and protecting the environment. Reducing CO2 emissions is a primary goal of Scania; we continuously develop solutions to help customers who want reduced CO2 emissions from transport," said Evelina Enăscuta, marketing representative at Scania.

The truck used is the Scania R40 A4x2NA model and operates on 6 battery packs totaling 624 kWh (468 kWh available). Its range allows it to cover a distance of 350 km with a 40-ton load.

"As the sole dealer in Romania, Hochstaffl Romania offers for testing the Schwarzmüller RH 125 Power Line Cargo semi-trailer. The light construction of the semi-trailer increases the payload for maximum efficiency in the quantity and volume transported, meeting the demands of the transport industry and beyond. POWER LINE offers more productivity through higher loading capacities, simpler, faster handling, and cost-effective maintenance. The trailer is yet another contribution from Schwarzmüller to reducing the carbon footprint," said Marian Bucur, Hochstaffl Romania representative.

"To ensure the continuity and efficiency of the project, we have installed charging stations in Buzău and Urziceni, thus facilitating the optimal operation of the electric truck on regional routes. Initial data collected during the pilot project indicates a range of 350 km with a single charge, from 0% to 100%," added Alina Genes, CEO of GreenTech.

The truck can only be charged at fast charging stations (DC), with a maximum power of 350 kW, allowing a full charge (0-100%) in 1 hour and 30 minutes. During the test, the truck was also equipped with a mobile charging station of 38 kW, with a full charging time of 12 hours and 25 minutes.

About GreenTech

GreenTech collects and recycles PET plastic waste, with recycling plants in Romania, Lithuania, and Slovakia, with a total installed capacity of 150,000 tons/year, equivalent to 2 billion PET packages. The processing results in raw materials in the form of PET flakes, from which the company produces PET strap, rPET granules, and polyester fiber, with applications in various industries.

GreenTech is the only company and the first in the EU to hold a European standard certification for "CO2 Emission Reduction from PET Waste Recycling" in Europe, saving 45,380t CO2 annually. Thus, the company can offer CO2 footprint neutralization certificates for individuals and companies.
